Pocket Parent Family Traditions

We asked parents to share some of their favorite family traditions. Here are some we've received so far:

* My family recently started a tradition of "special dinner" nights. It all started one night after my two boys (ages 6 & 8) had complained about not liking the dinner I cooked AGAIN! I asked them what they would like to have for the next evening and their eyes lit up. Right then, I decided to let them take turns planning the menu every Monday night. My only rule is that ice cream, cakes and cookies are not considered a meal. We started that Monday night and my oldest son decided to have hamburger steak, mac & cheese, corn on the cob and raw broccoli. I was amazed at his choices. It was a meal we had had before and he had complained when we did. The difference now was that it was HIS decision. We started this about 6 months ago and we still have our "special dinner night" every Monday. The boys keep track of whose night it is and sometimes start planning the menu a week in advance! The best part is they rarely complain about the meals the rest of the week!

* When I was growing up, Sunday night meant spending it together as a family, watching our favorite televsion shows, "Wonderful World of Disney'', followed by "Bonanza.'' My mom often fixed a wonderful dessert, which we were allowed to eat in the livingroom while we enjoyed the programs. I've tried to continue this Sunday night tradition with my husband and children. My kids surprisingly enjoy watching an unusual Japanese program called "Iron Chef'', where famous chefs have one hour to create unique dishes using a themed ingredient, such as octopus or seaweed. We eat our dinner in the livingroom while watching the chefs battle it out. My children look forward to this ritual every Sunday night.
